Alamo Colleges District Announces Sole Finalist for Chancellor

The publicly elected governing Board of Trustees for the Alamo Colleges District met on February 8, 2018 and voted to name as the Sole Finalist for Chancellor Dr. Mike Flores. Dr. Flores will replace current Alamo Colleges District Chancellor Dr. Bruce Leslie, who is retiring as of September 30, 2018 after 11 years of outstanding leadership of the district.

Dr. Flores has worked for the Alamo Colleges District since 1999, and since 2012 has served as President of Palo Alto College. Other positions he has held at Palo Alto College include Director of Institutional Research, Planning, and Development; Director of Title V Grant Program; Dean of Institutional Effectiveness and Community Development; Vice President of College Services; Vice President of Student Affairs; and Interim Vice President of Academic Affairs prior to becoming President.

Active in many community organizations, including the boards of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Communities in Schools, Hot Wells Park Conservancy, and the San Antonio Tricentennial Commission, Dr. Flores also serves as a Leadership Coach and Data Coach for Achieving the Dream; a Coach in the Texas Success Center Pathways Project; and on the Board of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities.

Dr. Flores holds a B.A. in Political Science from The University of Texas at San Antonio, an M.S. in Political Science from Illinois State University, and a Ph.D. in Educational Administration from The University of Texas at Austin.

The Chancellor search was a participative and representative process which included the use of an external search consultant who held four focus sessions with district and college administrators, and with the elected Staff Senate and Faculty Senate officers from across the colleges. In addition, the search consultant chaired a diverse 20-member Advisory Search Committee which was composed of 50% faculty, staff, and students and 50% business and community leaders who screened the applicant pool, developed interview questions aligned with the Position Profile advertised for the Chancellor position, interviewed candidates, and by consensus made recommendations of candidates the Board should carefully consider. The Board of Trustees also reviewed the entire applicant pool in consultation with the search consultant and unanimously accepted the recommendations of the Advisory Search Committee. Following interviews of candidates, the Board was unanimous in naming the Sole Finalist.

For more information about the search process, visit the Chancellor Search webpage.

A series of “meet and greet” opportunities will be scheduled soon to allow the next Chancellor to meet with internal and external constituencies.
