What is the Student Leadership Institute?

The Alamo Colleges Student Leadership Institute provides students the opportunity to develop their leadership potential – becoming proactive, productive, and engaging leaders on campus, in the workplace, and in the community. The Student Leadership Institute - Leadership Program TIER I and TIER II - is designed for the community college student. Students engage in dialogue and participate in a leadership course, leadership labs, and civic engagement.

What is the difference between the TIER I and TIER II Leadership Programs?

The TIER I Program is the foundation and first step in enhancing student leadership development. The TIER I program enables students to Identify areas of strength; Gain leadership knowledge and skills; Network with peers, professionals, and organizations; Inspire trust; Think outside the box; and Empower others – IGNITE! The TIER I Program is a fall and spring semester commitment (9 months). Students must meet the eligibility criteria and complete the application process to participate in this program.
The TIER II Program is designed for students that have successfully completed the TIER I Program. Participants in the TIER II Program network with Alamo Colleges Board of Trustees, Administrators, and college leaders; apply diversity of thought and action; and bridge the gap in the transition from college leadership experiences to university and/or entry-level career.

How much time do I need to commit to the TIER I Leadership Program?

What is required of the students accepted into TIER I Leadership Program?

Once accepted into the SLI TIER I Leadership Program, students are required to attend a weekly leadership course, leadership labs, and complete civic engagement service hours.

Class Instruction: SLI participants will receive a letter regarding their acceptance into the program and course information. All SLI classes are offered at one of the Alamo Colleges.

Leadership Labs: SLI participants are required to attend three Leadership Labs per semester. The Leadership Labs are workshop sessions held on Saturdays from 8:30am-2:00pm. The labs provide students the opportunity to learn from each other, district/college administrators, and business/community leaders.

Civic Engagement: SLI encourages campus and community volunteerism. In order to learn more about service before self, the SLI participants are required to complete a minimum of 5 hours of campus service and a minimum of 5 hours of community service. Upon completion, students are required to submit the Service Hours Form to their instructor.

What do I receive for participating in the Student Leadership Institute?

Students accepted into the Leadership Program will receive scholarship and internship opportunities and have the ability to participate in district committees and learning communities. Upon completion of the program, the Student Leadership Institute will update your transcript with program recognition of which four-year institutions and employers critically review. Most important, you will increase your self-confidence, improve your communication skills, build relationships, promote a positive image of the community college student, become a college ambassador, and emerge as a proactive and productive leader.
