2014 Black History Month Concerts

Add to Calendar

St. Philip’s College presents the San Antonio Youth Wind Ensemble’s 2014 Black History Month Concerts featuring excerpts from George and Ira Gershwin’s “Porgy and Bess”. Under the direction of Albert Aguilar, the San Antonio Youth Wind Ensemble will accompany local artists: Vincent Hardy, Ana Hernandez, and Gralin Vinning as they sing legendary excerpts from the musical including Summertime, Bess You is My Woman Now, Ain’t necessarily So, and I Got Plenty of Nuthin’. In honor and tribute to Nelson Mandela, the concert will begin with David Holsinger’s Liturgical Dances, and then feature A Distant Land, A Prayer for Freedom by John Rutter. Black History Month remains an important moment for America to celebrate the achievements and contributions African-Americans have played in U.S. history.

February has been designated as Black History Month by every U.S. president since 1976. The concerts will be presented on Sunday, February 16, 2014 at 2:30 p.m. in the Watson Fine Arts Center on the main campus of St. Philip’s College. The concerts are admission free and open to the public. Seating is done on a first-come, first seated basis. The auditorium seats 600 guests. For more information about SAYWE or the concerts, please contact: Nina McGrath at 210-486-2704 or nmcgrath@alamo.edu. For the 2013–2014 season, SAYWE is partnering with the San Antonio Food Bank. We ask that audience members bring a non-perishable food item for collection at each of this season’s concerts to help those in our community.
