About the building
The William R. Sinkin Eco
Centro building is
multipurpose community facility which will provide free meeting/office space
for neighborhood associations and offer a range of low-cost and free workshops
to area homeowners to promote sustainable lifestyles.
In September 2010,
San Antonio College received $600,000 from HUD through its Hispanic-Serving
Institutions Assisting Communities Program for construction. Early construction
planning began in January 2011. The Eco Centro building is in the process of
obtaining LEED Certification and will feature solar energy and rain harvesting.
Phase II will include a community garden and the addition of a B-cycle station.
About the mural
The idea of including a mural was not in the original construction
plans. Local Tobin Hill resident and artist, Luis Lopez was commissioned to
create a wall mural on the building’s street-facing facade. The mural spans the
entire wall of the building exterior facing N. Main Ave. It depicts the history
of the Tobin Hill neighborhood, starting from the indigenous San Pedro Springs
going through current day.
