  1. What is Office Communicator?
    Office Communicator 2007 is a unified communication tool with rich real-time communication capabilities to allow teams and information workers to share information in an easy and yet efficient manner. The system comes with many communication options, including, real-time chat, audio and video and web conferencing capabilities. The system will initially be deployed on a limited basis with text-based messaging options. Using a phased approach, more features will be enabled later in 2008.

  1. Is OCS same as Office Communicator 2007?
    No. Office Communicator 2007 client requires a connection to Microsoft Office Communications Server (OCS). Your sign-in address is your identity you will use to connect to the backend Office Communications Server. Your sign-in name is your email address (For example(jdoe@alamo.edu).

  1. How do I login to Office Communicator 2007?
    To login, access your START menu, select "All Programs" and then select "Office Communicator 2007" from the list of programs. You will be prompted with a login screen. At the login prompt, enter your sign-in name (same as your email address). For the username, select "root\PALS ID" (example: root\jdoe) and for the password, use your email password. As a final step, select the "Sign-in" button.

  1. Can I access Office Communicator via the web?
    Yes. Microsoft Office Communicator can be used on any windows or apple computer via the web without downloading the client application.

    Follow the steps below to access the web version:

    1. Open up a browser and enter the web address (https://im.accd.edu), make sure the pop-ups are not blocked.
    2. For Domain\user, enter root\PALSID. For example: root\jdoe.
    3. For password, use your email password.
    4. You will also have the option of advertising your availability status by choosing one of the options from the Sign in as menu. As a final step, select the Sign in button.

  1. How do I setup this program?
    OCS can be accessed from home and at the office. The program client will be automatically loaded on your office workstation. For home use, you will need to download the Office Communicator client and complete a few configuration steps. The application will also be available from the web.

  1. Can I use this application, if I am a MAC user?
    Yes, MAC users can use this tool by using the Messenger 7.0+ for MAC or using OCS Web Access (https://im.accd.edu)

  1. You get an error message that Communicator cannot synchronize with the address book server.
    You will need to put the following URL in your browsers trusted sites "https://ocs.ad.root" and follow these steps to add a URL to your trusted sites:

    1. Open Internet Options in Internet Explorer 6 or 7.
    2. Click on the Security Tab.
    3. Click on Trusted Sites and then click in the Sites button.
    4. In the Add this Website to the Zone field, type. "https://ocs.ad.root" click on Add.
    5. Click Close, Click OK.
    6. Restart Communicator by right clicking on the Communicator Icon in the system tray and clicking Exit.
    7. Go to Start>Program Files and Click on Microsoft Office Communicator 2007 to start Communicator.
    8. You should not receive the error anymore.
