Prior Learning Assessment
The knowledge you’ve gained outside the classroom is valuable. It is important that this knowledge be recognized. Now we have a process for ensuring your knowledge is recognized and validated. It’s called PLA (prior learning assessment) and you can do it online today.

You have two options for learning how to complete a PLA  Portfolio for credit consideration.

Path Option One -  PLA 1001 - Instructor Led  - $500

You can enroll in an online instructor led course that includes weekly assignments.  The course delves into experiential learning theory, concepts, and models.  You can expect to dedicate 8-10 hours per week to finish assignments and plan for additional hours for building your portfolio. The course is delivered by our partner, Learning Counts.   Upon successful completion you will receive a certificate of completion from the Alamo Colleges.

Path Option Two -  PLA 1002 -Self-Directed - $129

You can enroll in an self-directed course that includes activities and interactive media resources.  The course delves into experiential learning theory, concepts, and models.  You can expect to dedicate 12-15 hours per week to finish assignments and plan for additional hours for building your portfolio. The course is delivered through our partner, Learning Counts.   Upon successful completion you will receive a certificate of completion from the Alamo Colleges.

Both courses will provide you with the guidance you need to develop a portfolio that reflects your credit worthy learning experiences.  Once you complete either PLA 1001 or PLA 1002, you then can enroll in PLA 1003 to develop your for-credit portfolio to seek a block of  1-12 hours credit within a single subject area.  The cost  per portfolio developed is $250.  An Alamo College Program of Study Lead will assist you with identifying the courses from your desired program of study for which your prior learning is appropriate for course credit.

*** Note: You must develop a separate portfolio for each subject area for which you are seeking credit)  ***
