On-Campus Employment

International students holding an F-1 status must complete 12 credit hours of course work each semester and have a minimum of a 2.0 overall GPA in order to apply for on-campus employment. Visit the international advisor at your Alamo College to obtain authorization for on-campus employment. Employment authorization will be canceled if you do not maintain your F-1 status. The following rules also apply:

  • Employment must not exceed 20 hours per week while school is in session
  • Student must obtain a social security number

 Off-Campus Employment

Only the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) can authorize off-campus employment for international students who meet certain government qualifications. The guidelines below will help you determine if you are eligible for off-campus employment. If you have any questions about the USCIS guidelines, visit the international advisor at your Alamo College. Students must:

  • Remain in good academic standing one academic year
  • Maintain an overall GPA of 2.0 or higher
  • Have a severe economic hardship requiring employment
  • Submit a letter to your international advisor explaining your severe economic hardship
    • Provide documentation of your hardship such as medical bills, an unexpected change in the financial circumstances of your sponsor, home country currency devaluation, large increases in tuition, loss of scholarships, or loss of on-campus employment
    • Discuss your efforts to find on-campus employment
    • Include a list of your income and expenses
