It is a great honor to have been selected as the first Director for the Murguía Learning Institute (MLI). My background with San Antonio College goes back to August of 1974 when I became an instructor in the Business Department. From 1980 to 2010 I served as Program Coordinator for Real Estate and through the years have taught courses in Management, Marketing, and Real Estate. In 1984 I received my Ed.D. from Texas A&M University and have published several texts and numerous articles through the years. A number of teaching award honors have come my way from a variety of sources, much to my surprise and delight.
In 2004 President Zeigler asked me to Chair our Reaffirmation Committee for SACS. I have worked for Dr. Zeigler in a wide variety of roles, academic and otherwise for many years and was grateful to serve as Chair. The outcome of our outstanding SACS review was the development of the MLI with our first class being offered on Fall 2005 to 38 new tenure track faculty. As of Fall 2010 230 full time faculty-time faculty, 123 adjunct faculty, and 57 Continuing Education faculty for a total of 410 faculty members have been through MLI training. The results have been most gratifying with performance measures indicating the programs offered have improved our effectivieness in the classroom at serving our students in PGR and Retention improvement. Likewise a variety of offerings for our important staff members have resulted in nearly 1400 attendees at the various programs we have presented.
Besides my work at SAC, I still am involved in my discipline with an active brokerage and consulting practice. It has been a privilege to serve as an Adjunct Professor for UTSA. I have taught numerous Graduate classes at the SAC campus as well the Downtown UTSA campus dealing with Higher Education and Educational Leadership. In Fall 2008 we began Adult and Higher Education classes from Texas A&M University College Station on our campus. It has also been an honor to serve on some dissertation committees from varios schools. In Fall 2009 we began a partnership with TAMU-SA, to bring Adult Education and Counseling classes to our campus in order to lead to a Certificate, Masters, and eventually become part of a Doctoral program as that new school grows.
My wife Danell, a 20 year corporate executive turned First Grade teacher, turned Diagnostician, turned Public School Administrator and I live in Spring Branch Texas with our 18 and 13 year olds. (We are definitely geriatric parents!) We have a couple of ranches that we enjoy and raise some high quality American Quarter Horses and practice some intensive game management in Frio County where I am a 4 th generation land owner.
SAC has been a wonderful place to spend my entire career and I am truly delighted to be involved with helping our faculty and staff and administrators continue to make this an even better place to work and to come to school.
