Student of the Month Award For August 2012 - La Prensa Foundation Inspirational

Flor Semersky
Major: Liberal Arts
GPA: 3.0
Palo Alto College

Flor Semersky is the recipient of the August 2012 La Prensa Foundation Inspirational Student of the Month award and will receive $500 funded by La Prensa Foundation founded by Amelia and Tino Duran.

Ms. Semersky is pursuing an Associate of Arts in Liberal Arts. She maintains a 3.0 grade point average and hopes to work with veterans in assisting them with their transition to the civilian world, and educating them on the various services and benefits available to them from the Veterans Administration.

Ms. Semersky has distinguished herself through service activities on and off-campus. From the time Flor started her education at Palo Alto College, she began working in the campus Veterans Affairs Office as a volunteer before being approved for a work-study position by the regional VA office.

A veteran of the US Air Force, Flor currently serves as the inaugural President of the Student Veterans Organization (SVO), and as an active member of the Sigma Lambda Honor Society. She is also a member of the college’s Student Services Fee Advisory Committee.

In her role as SVO President, Flor has been an indefatigable activist for veterans on and off campus. Under her leadership, SVO worked with Office of Student Engagement and Retention in organizing the 2011 Veterans Day Ceremony that recognized more than 100 students, faculty and staff members for their military service. She also led the organization in putting together the 10th Anniversary 9-11 Remembrance Ceremony.

In November 2011, Flor teamed up with the national Wounded Warriors organization to bring a “Wounded Warriors Bike Ride” to the PAC campus. The event drew more than 500 cyclists from throughout the city to raise funds for the Wounded Warrior Project.
As the SVO President and senior VA Work-study employee, she truly exemplifies the kind of student Palo Alto College is proud to honor with Alamo Colleges Student of the Month recognition.

Please help me in congratulating Flor Semersky
as the Alamo Colleges – La Prensa Foundation Inspirational Student of the Month Award for August 2012
