Semmes Success Scholarship Recipients Honored at Reception

The inaugural class of 25 Semmes Success Scholarship recipients was saluted by Alamo Colleges' Chancellor Bruce Leslie and San Antonio College President Robert Zeigler at an Alamo Colleges Foundation reception held in the Koehler House at SAC on October 29.  The Semmes Foundation, represented by Tom and Pat Semmes, was also recognized for its generosity in donating $600,000 over a four-year period to fund the scholarships.

The Semmes Success Scholarship is unique in its focus on completion and graduation. The scholarship targets "first-time-in-college" students and complements several Alamo Colleges' initiatives that reinforce staying on track to completion. These include: declaring a major, maintaining a degree plan and taking a full course load; maintaining a minimum 2.5 GPA; and meeting regularly with an academic advisor. Recipients are eligible for awards totaling up to $,2500 per academic year as they move forward to completion of a degree or technical certification. In addition, they are eligible to receive a $1,000 incentive for completing their degree on time.

Stephanie Cruz, a teaching major at Palo Alto College, expressed her gratitude for the Semmes Success Scholarship. "I understand that there is a  limit on the number of people who get such an award," said Cruz. "I feel grateful for being chosen and I will reach my goals successfully because you have given me the chance," she added.

The inaugural class of Semmes Success Scholars includes five students from each of the five Alamo Colleges.
