Dean's Backyard Holds Grand Opening

The Kinesiology Department recently held a grand opening for their Dean’s Backyard just south of the Candler Physical Education Center. The Kinesiology Department took two tennis courts and turned them into an outside exercise area.

The department started planning the project about a year ago with Dr. Conrad Krueger, dean of arts and sciences, helping with fundraising. The term backyard refers to where someone would play, climb trees, play ball, run, jump and more; hence the name Dean’s Backyard. They completed the installation of the facilities in late fall of 2013. The facilities includes chin bars, horizontal ladders, a 10-foot climbing wall, balance beams, parallel bars and a storage room for other equipment such as medicine balls, battling ropes, kettle bells and tires.

The area will be used by various fitness related classes, although no one class meets there all of the time.

“It is basically an auxiliary work out area and of course ‘Life is Better Outside’,” said Kinesiology Department Chairperson Bill Richardson.
