SAC Staff Council Holds Book Drive

The children at Maverick Elementary were excited as staff council members visited the school to deliver and read books to the classes. A total of 426 books were donated this month for kinder and first graders at Maverick Elementary.

San Antonio College Staff Council held a Book Drive to collect the books. The goal was to collect 250 books. Through the generosity of San Antonio College, Staff Council exceeded that goal by 176 books!

Dee Dixon sat with a first grade class of about 15 students that were rapt to attention as she read a book about some animals that studied the pharaohs and built a cardboard pyramid. After picking their own books from those donated, Dixon and a student read some of a Clifford book together to the class.

Carlos Flores had an interesting approach. Before reading the chosen book to his class, he entertained the students with some yo-yo tricks. He said students were requesting tricks for him to perform. After that fun, he proceeded to read the book to the class.

Helen Torres, Staff Council President, said the event was a success.

Torres said the objective of the book drive was to promote literacy, reading and to create a college going culture by exposing the kids to SAC at an early age.

Each child in kinder and first grade classes was able to take a new book and bookmark home.
