New President Announced
In a special board meeting on Wednesday night, the Alamo
Colleges Board of Trustees selected Dr. Robert Vela as the 12th
president of San Antonio College. Vela will replace current president, Dr.
Robert Zeigler. Zeigler announced his retirement at the beginning of the spring
2014 semester after serving the College for 43+ years.
“Dr. Vela is an extraordinary person and leader. As a vice
president, his dedication to the College has proved he is not only an effective
administrator, but that he has a vision for SAC’s future,” said Dr. Zeigler. “I
am confident in his ability to advance SAC’s historic and significant role in
the community, and I am proud to call him my successor and my friend.”
Currently the Vice President for Student and Academic
Success, Vela brings more than 18 years of experience in educational administration.
In his current role, Vela oversees day-to-day college operations and develops
policies and procedures for academic and student affairs personnel.
Additionally, he is responsible for monitoring professional
development activities for faculty, supervising the college deans and ensuring
alignment of academic and workforce programs and student success initiatives.
“I am absolutely humbled and honored, but honestly it is
surreal,” claimed Dr. Vela. “I cherish Dr. Zeigler’s legacy, and I hope to
build upon it as we strive to meet the Board’s charge—student success.” He
continued, “I want to thank the San Antonio College community for their support
as we embark upon this new journey together.”
Dr. Vela will assume the role of president in the fall 2014
semester. An exact start date is still to be determined.
