Alamo Colleges Offers Free Job Training for Qualified Veterans

The Alamo Colleges are now enrolling students in tuition-free manufacturing technician training for qualified veterans. This program, funded by a grant from the Texas Workforce Commission, prepares graduates for a career in one of three areas: welding, team assembly and machinist. The self-paced classes take from one to three months to complete and are a hybrid of online and laboratory instruction. Classes are offered day and evenings at the Alamo Colleges Workforce Center of Excellence, located at 203 Norton Street, adjacent to St. Philip's College's Southwest Campus.

The manufacturing technician training, valued at $2,700-$4,500 per student, is offered at no cost to all veterans with at least a general discharge, including those currently enrolled in Texas Workforce Commission programs and those receiving unemployment benefits. Prospective students must take an assessment test to enroll in the program.

The programs offered are:
• Welding – 160 combined class and online hours
• Team Assembly – 320 combined class and online hours
• Machinist – 480 combined class and online hours

Projected wages, growth in the number of jobs and the number currently employed in these areas are:
• Welder - $18.53/hr. - 16.8% growth by 2020 – 2,320 currently employed
• Machinist - $17.88/hr. - 27.8% growth by 2020 – 1,330 currently employed
• Team Assembler - $13.32/hr. - 17.6% growth by 2020 – 4,030 currently employed

Graduates can earn up to four Manufacturing Skills Standards Council certifications, up to four National Institute for Metalworking Skills Level I certifications, fundamental and intermediate welding skills certificates and a National Career Readiness Center certificate.

To enroll in one of the programs or for more information, call 210-485-0246 or email mprice@alamo.edu. The training will be offered through September 2015, but class size is limited.
