“Shameful” by Ramon Cantú

Bold and strong, no where else it could belong.

Almighty to the Earth, the Heavens allow its soul a constant rebirth.

Weathered, abused, and broken, an illness it wants to fight, A possession of

souls, it now understands their plight.

Shady to the Malady, her prejudice only smiles, aware of its misplaced History,

Humans have entertained it with an inhumane, unjust, and brutal memory.

Men, women, and little children have been slain and maimed to thee, Enslaved

for life, only to be found by a beautiful death that freedom let me be.

Rain nor light has given it life, only that of tears and blood have given it growth

through anger, hate, and strife.

It blooms in the chill with pain and suffering, its greenery for those that sway

windless provides a buffering.

Guilt and remorse for its created harm, the pain and sadness, it pleads the sun

for the burn of rotten arms.

Caretaker of all those children that once dangled there with patience, calmly and

peacefully, If I could please ask you for forgiveness, I am one of many, an Oak

Tree.

Read a Good Movie lately?

Basing movies on novels has a long history in Hollywood. This semester, the Northeast Lakeview community will read, and watch, To Kill a Mockingbird. Sometimes movies complement the novels on which they’re based or adapted, sometimes leading us to imagine that the protagonist of the novel is one in the same with the leading actor in the movie, as with Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch. Some adaptations didn’t do well at all at the box office, while their print counterparts were highly-acclaimed, as in Tom Wolfe’s The Bonfire of the Vanities.

Recently, several movies have been based on novels that you can find at NLC Library or another ACCD Library.

Simply search the ACCD Online Catalog by the title of the book. For example, Atonement, which is in theaters now. Note the call # and location to find the book.

If you want to request a copy from another ACCD Library, complete the online form for In-District Borrowing under “services” on the library’s website or come by the library’s service desk. Usually the book will arrive within a day or two.

You might also consider reading other books by the authors of these titles. For example, if you enjoyed Atonement, you might want to read other works by Ian McEwan, such as Saturday or Amsterdam.
