Online Reading Lists & Durable Linking

NLC Library users have access to over 42,000 unique periodical titles made available through our electronic databases. You can use the A to Z Online Journal Locator to determine if a particular title is fulltext and, if so, the period of coverage. We also have over 40,000 Netlibrary e-books. Linking to these as part of your online reading list is possible but you'll need to have students go through our proxy server. (Read more below).

If you discover that a fulltext article is something that you want students to read, you can create online reading lists by using the article's "durable link". The database vendors provide what's called a persistent or durable url to fulltext articles that can be captured and coupled with the library's proxy server to provide direct access for students on and off-campus. You can make these links available through your course portal, Blackboard, or web pages. This ensures that students are finding the correct article. Getting students to a specific article in an online database (even with a full citation) doesn't always work well for those less practiced in the art of online searching.

After searching the various databases (including the Online Catalog) and finding the material that you want your students to have direct access to, look for the permanent or durable link. Here are some examples from the EBSCO, GALE and the ProQuest databases.

We know that this may be a bit confusing and we will be happy to walk you through this process. Send us an e-mail or give us a call at 210.486.5388.

Netlibrary E-books

Locate the book in the ACCD Online Catalog
Make sure there is a link, "Electronic book access for Northeast Lakeview College"
Copy/Paste the persistent link

EBSCO Databases

In the full citation, you'll see an entry labeled Persistent link to this record (permalink). Copy and past this URL into a working file:

GALE Databases BOOKMARK method tutorial. InfoMark method tutorial.

Step 1)

In GALE databases that use bookmarks (look in the upper left corner), copy and paste the URL that's indicated into a working file. In GALE databases the use InfoMarks, copy and paste the search result URL into a working file.

Step 2)
Copy and paste the library's proxy server URL IN FRONT OF the article URL. Our proxy URL is https://proxy.nlc.alamo.edu:4443/login?url=

Here's how it should look as posted on your portal or page - https://proxy.nlc.alamo.edu:4443/login?url=http://find.galegroup.com/ovrc/infomark.do?&contentSet=IAC-Documents&type=retrieve&tabID=T003&prodId=OVRC&docId=A162125730&source=gale&srcprod=OVRC&userGroupName=txshracd2907&version=1.0

ProQuest Databases

Step 1)

After using one of the ProQuest databases to find a source that you want to directly link for your students (this includes some broadcasting transcripts and audio/video files), copy the result of the search from the address search bar. Paste this URL string into a working file. This URL will be very long and will look something like this -

http://elibrary.bigchalk.com/libweb/curriculum/do/document?set=search&groupid=1&requestid=lib_standard&resultid=6&edition=&ts=063AC5B845BFD253853997B5FB66B27B_1182805338489&urn=urn%3Abigchalk%3AUS%3BBCLib%3Bdocument%3B53328101

Step 2)
Copy and paste the library's proxy server URL IN FRONT OF the article URL. Our proxy URL is
https://proxy.nlc.alamo.edu:4443/login?url=

Here's how it should look as posted on your portal or page -

https://proxy.nlc.alamo.edu:4443/login?url=http://elibrary.bigchalk.com/libweb/curriculum/do/document?set=search&groupid=1&requestid=lib_standard&resultid=6&edition=&ts=063AC5B845BFD253853997B5FB66B27B_1182805338489&urn=urn%3Abigchalk%3AUS%3BBCLib%3Bdocument%3B53328101
