ACCD’s Northeast Lakeview College Receives $221,000 Grant to Provide Scholarships for Guadalupe County Seniors

(September 11, 2008)TG Public Benefit Grant Program has awarded Northeast Lakeview College $221, 302 in grant money to fund Making the College Connection, a project that will benefit the 2009 graduates from Marion, Seguin, and Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City Independent School Districts. Making the College Connection is designed to streamline the transition from high school to college and to provide financial support for college. Over 125 scholarships will be awarded to the 2009 high school seniors from these three school districts to attend Northeast Lakeview College in Fall 2009.
Through a series of college preparation presentations, workshops, and college campus visits, Making the College Connection is intended to provide hands-on and personal student guidance through the college application and registration process. As the project fiscal agent, Northeast Lakeview College advisors will deliver the college presentations and workshops on each of the high school campuses and provide a two-week academic Summer camp that will review essential skills in the areas of English, Reading, and Math.
College Connections is an Alamo Community Colleges district-wide initiative modeled after the state and nationally recognized college preparation course developed by Austin Community College, but Making the College Connection is the second program to award scholarships. Northeast Lakeview College received a similar grant last year that provided scholarships to Judson ISD seniors, who are now Northeast Lakeview College students.
“The structure of this program will guide the transition from high school to college and provide the ongoing student support services they need for academic success,” says Dr. Eric Reno, Northeast Lakeview College president.
