I have been notified that I am on 1st Academic Dismissal. What steps must I take?

All students on 1st Academic Dismissal will have to submit a petition for waiver of Academic Dismissal packet to the Academic Standards team by email at nvc-ast@alamo.edu Prior to petition submission, you must ensure that you meet the eligibility requirements listed below.

What are the eligibility requirements for submitting an academic dismissal petition?

Click here to obtain a Petition Checklist to keep track of all required steps.

 - Must have an active application  for the semester you are submitting a petition. If you have not attended an Alamo College in the last 12 months, you will need to submit a new application and complete all admissions requirements prior to attending your advising session. Please see alamo.edu/AlamoENROLL/ for application and admissions steps.

 - Must not have any holds on your record other than the Academic Dismissal hold.  All other holds must be cleared/ waived prior to attending your petition advising session.

- Must attend a Pre-Petition Information Session. Students may view the list of available sessions and how to RSVP at www.alamo.edu/nvc/current-students/academic-standards/pre-petition/

PLEASE NOTE: If you are under the age of 22, state law now requires you to provide proof of Bacterial Meningitis Vaccination. For more information visit www.alamo.edu/meningitis/  .

Start II/ Flex II / Summer Semesters: NVC does not accept petitions for these terms.

If you are not sure which level of dismissal you are on, please  contact the Academic Standards team at nvc-ast@alamo.edu to send an email request to review your record. Please include your full name and banner ID in the message.

Where do I obtain a dismissal packet?

Click here to obtain your packet.

Dismissal packets must be completed in full with all sections filled out and a typed Reflection Statement attached when submitted. Acceptable file formats are PDF and Word. No other file formats are able to be viewed. Students who submit incomplete packets or have not completed all eligibility requirements listed above will not have a Dismissal Interview scheduled until all requirements have been met. If you have any questions about how to fill out any parts of the petition packet, you may contact the Academic Standards team by email at nvc-ast@alamo.edu or by phone at 210-486-4459.

How and When can I submit my academic dismissal petition?

Students on a 1st academic dismissal will submit their completed petition packets by email at nvc-ast@alamo.edu . Once your packet has been received, it will be reviewed by the Academic Standards team to ensure that all of the following requirements have been met:
 - All pages of packet are completely filled out
 - A typed Reflection Statement is included in the email submission
 - Student has completed all admission requirements and is registration ready

Submit the petition from your student ( ACES) email account only. Petitions submitted from your personal email account may not be reviewed. Petitions are not accepted in person.

Students who meet all eligibility requirements are notified  through their ACES email with information regarding the Pre-Petition Information session. Students who do not meet all the requirements will be notified which requirements are lacking and asked to resubmit their packet once all requirements have been met. Dates for submitting petitions will be updated for each semester on this website (see box on right side).

**As we have limited spots each semester we highly recommend that you submit your packet as early in the petition period as possible. Once all Dismissal Interviews have filled, students  will have to wait until the following semester to petition.

Before you submit your petition, please ensure that you meet all of the requirements above. Please make sure that you have followed all directions on the petition, and have a completed packet. No extensions on deadlines will be given.
Missed appointments, especially without prior notification, will only be rescheduled once, if Dismissal Interviews are available. A second missed appointment will result in automatic denial of your petition for the semester.

What can I expect to happen in my Dismissal Interview session?

Students will meet with an academic advisor to review their petition packet and discuss their plan to be successful. In the Dismissal Interview, the student will be given a decision as to whether the petition is approved or denied. If the petition is approved, the student will be eligible to register starting on their assigned time ticket date. You will also be registered for a required Strategies for Success course (SDEV0171). More information regarding this class will be provided in the Dismissal Interview. During your interview, you will work with an advisor to develop an Action Plan to help you be successful in your returning semester and beyond. You will also be provided with a list of available resources on campus that will help you stay on the road to success.

What are my responsibilities as a student on a 1st Academic Dismissal from the Alamo Colleges District?

Students that are approved are expected to meet the following requirements:

  •  Actively attend and participate in ALL enrolled classes, including the SDEV0171 course
  • Complete the SDEV0171 course with a "C" or higher
  • Visit with their assigned academic advisor at least once during the semester
  • Earn a semester GPA of 2.0 or higher
  • Continually earn a semester GPA of 2.0 or above until in Good Standing (cumulative institutional GPA of 2.0) is reached in order to remain enrolled.

Students whose petitions are approved are provided a copy of their Student Success Action Plan and a detailed explanation of their responsibilities. Not complying with all the responsibilities will result in the student having to sit out a full 16-week semester, and submit a new petition after the sit-out period. Not earning a semester GPA of 2.0 or higher will automatically place you on the next level of dismissal.

There is no option to petition the sit-out requirement once a student is placed on 2nd Academic Dismissal

When will I be back in Good Academic Standing?

Students are placed back in Good Academic Standing when both their overall institutional and semester GPA's are a 2.0 or higher. Once a student is back in Good Academic Standing their registration hold will be expired and their enrollment hours will be restored to full time.

Petition Dates

Attention Students-  If you are seeking to petition an academic dismissal, the Fall 2018 petition season is currently underway.

Note: All petition packets must be submitted by email at nvc-ast@alamo.edu by the deadline. Please read all information regarding submission of your packet carefully. Dismissal Interviews are limited - once all sessions and SDEV0171 course offerings are full, petitions will no longer be accepted - regardless of the deadline date.
