Student Story: John
John Austin Benavides already earned his associate degree in business administration from Northwest Vista College in 2010, but that didn’t stop him from coming back.
“My friends ask me what am I still doing here? For me, it’s the environment, camaraderie and flexibility,” said John, 23, whose main reason for sticking around is his job with NVC’s Teaching and Learning Facilitation area.
In addition to working part-time at NVC, John recently started taking classes at the University of Texas at San Antonio to get a bachelor’s in business.
John said for him earning an associate degree was a major milestone since he’s the first in his family to earn a degree.
John has also traveled some distance to get his degree. He graduated from high school in Laredo and then moved back to San Antonio to attend college. He heard so many good things about NVC, he decided to switch colleges and make the longer drive to NVC.
After a few years back in San Antonio, John moved closer to NVC. His goal is to eventually teach part- time at NVC and hopefully start his own business.
“A lot of my family members don’t have a college education and I’m going to try to be the first one to get my bachelor’s degree,” he said. “I’m hoping after I get my degree, I can continue to stay at NVC because I really like it here.”
