Replacing the Horrible with the Exceptional

Each semester students and faculty struggle with the difficulty and anxiety of giving speeches. This session will show teachers how to stop continuing the horror, and instead, replacing it with the exceptional. Examples of speaking presentations from different disciplines will be offered to illustrate the ease of putting a speaking assignment into your outline, whether it be big or small. Rubrics in how to grade these assignments will also be given. Then, we want to hear from you. There will be an open discussion of how you do it. Everyone will walk away an improved instructor.

This session will cover Turnitin features including Web-based essay submission, automatic plagiarism detection, peer review, grade book, and Web-based markup and rubrics. Although it is not necessary, participants are encouraged to contact Bonnie Sellers at bsellers@alamo.edu at least two weeks prior to this session to have a Turnitin account set up in your name. This way you will be able to practice at the session. Otherwise, we will orient you to the process and have your account generated afterwards.

Breakthroughs in understanding of how the brain works has focused attention of the importance of creativity in thought processes, even in fields such as science which are usually associated with logical rather than creative thought. What are the implications for higher education? How can we foster the growth of creative thought in our students? Fine and performing arts faculty Jane King, Melissa Marlowe, Mimi Duvall and Bill Colangelo will present a brief theoretical overview followed by concrete hands-on classroom activities that can inspire new teaching ideas in a cross-disciplinary way.
