Most of our instructors know nothing about NVC's Recruitment efforts! Have you ever wondered what recruiters tell the students about the college, your classes or you? This session will explain what they do, how they do it and why. The more you know about them, the better you will understand the way things work. This is also an opportunity for them to hear from you so they may walk-away with new ideas that can be implemented this semester.

Each semester students and faculty struggle with the difficulty and anxiety of giving speeches. This session will show teachers how to stop continuing the horror, and instead, replacing it with the exceptional. Examples of speaking presentations from different disciplines will be offered to illustrate the ease of putting a speaking assignment into your outline, whether it be big or small. Rubrics in how to grade these assignments will also be given. Then, we want to hear from you. There will be an open discussion of how you do it. Everyone will walk away an improved instructor.

Presented in three 8-hour days, the 7 Habits process by Stephen Covey is a lasting solution that helps build stronger organizations by strengthening the character and competence of the individuals who comprise them. This approach provides the most comprehensive foundation available for fostering positive change at all four levels of leadership: personal, interpersonal, managerial, and organizational. In turn, this solid foundation of principle-centered behavior makes other training initiatives in the organization more productive and valuable. Notes: Days 2 & 3, February 19 & 26, 2010.

Do you feel like your students sometimes just regurgitate what they have heard from others and don't really think about the things they say? As teachers we need to insure students are thinking reasonably and with sound judgment and support. Enhancing our student's critical thinking skills will enable them to support their work with better sources as well as argue their points more effectively.

Breakthroughs in understanding of how the brain works has focused attention of the importance of creativity in thought processes, even in fields such as science which are usually associated with logical rather than creative thought. What are the implications for higher education? How can we foster the growth of creative thought in our students? Fine and performing arts faculty Jane King, Melissa Marlowe, Mimi Duvall and Bill Colangelo will present a brief theoretical overview followed by concrete hands-on classroom activities that can inspire new teaching ideas in a cross-disciplinary way.
