Nuts and Bolts: Construction Update Corner

Update provided by Deb Morgan, Dean/Construction Liaison

  • Last week the Alamo Colleges Board of Trustees approved the guaranteed maximum price for the construction of the first two buildings as well as the new parking lot near the portables. This important event signals the beginning of site preparation for the construction of all buildings in the Capital Improvement Program (CIP). You will notice many contractors on the site during the coming weeks and months.
  • The first two buildings to be constructed are Juniper Hall Academic Center and Redbud Hall Library and Learning Resources. These buildings will be completed by July 2008 with occupancy slated for the fall semester of that year. A few short months later, Live Oak Hall Academic Center and the Cypress Campus Center will be completed and ready for occupancy in January 2009. Finally, the Palmetto Fine and Performing Arts Center will be ready for occupancy in fall 2009.
  • All construction traffic will be routed onto the campus from Wiseman. A new entrance to the campus is being created in this area. For the next 18 months, the entrance at Wiseman will be a construction entrance only. Once Live Oak Hall and the Cypress Campus Center open (December 2008), this entrance will be open to students and employees as well.
  • A new parking lot just north of the portables will be completed this summer. This lot will net the campus approximately 200 new spaces including 15 much needed handicapped spaces.
  • Some fencing will begin to appear between the existing campus buildings and the construction site. Entering the construction site can be very dangerous. All students and employees are asked to steer clear of the construction site. At various times during construction, our district facilities team will invite students and employees to participate in tours. At all other times, it is important to stay out of the construction area.
  • Faculty members Carla Kaylor, Chris Hairston and Andrea Anderson met with Brandon Patton of Barlett Cocke Construction to develop a plan to address the displacement of animals that will be caused by the construction processes. The group devised a plan to notify wildlife rescue should construction workers come across animals that may be in jeopardy or at risk.
