Construction Update Corner

This new area is designed to provide bi-monthly construction updates for Northwest Vista College.

Nuts and Bolts
Construction Update
May 2007
Deb Morgan, Dean/Construction Liaison

Construction term of the month: CIP – CIP stands for Capital Improvement Program – these are projects resulting from the successful passage of the ACCD bond, including the $106 million for projects at NVC.

Students, staff and faculty have been involved in the programming phase of new buildings, several of which are slated to open in the fall of 2008. The programming phase includes opportunities for new building end-users to speak with the architects about the requirements for classrooms, labs, employee work space and other specialized spaces. Following the programming phase is the design phase, and then finally, construction. Student and employee input are critical at every phase of the building process.

Focus in the initial phase of planning is on three buildings:

  • Redbud Hall – Library and Learning Resource Center
  • Juniper Hall – Academic Center
  • Cypress Campus Center

Redbud Hall will house the library, the open labs, an adaptive technology lab, the Writing Across the Curriculum lab, a specialized multimedia lab for all students, multimedia classrooms, some music and art classrooms, and mass communications classrooms. Juniper Hall will be home to the disciplines of Reading, English as a Second Language, Education, Math and English.  This building will house labs for most of those disciplines as well as classrooms and faculty work space. The Cypress Campus Center will house all of Student Success services as well as the Bookstore, Foodservice Operations and meeting/activity space.

Initial design ideas for faculty workspace were presented this past week to a faculty team appointed by the Senate. These designs will be updated and shared with all faculty members in the coming weeks.  Designs will be posted in faculty work areas for comment and feedback. All input about these design options is welcome and important in arriving at the best possible configuration.

Town meetings will be held on June 14 at 9:00 a.m. and June 15 at 3:00 p.m. to update all employees and students about progress on the CIP (location TBA). If you are interested in reviewing the work completed on the CIP to date, feel free to check out the construction file on the V drive at V:\College Construction.

Special thanks go out to the following individuals who have been active in contributing their best thinking about the design of these buildings: Brian Stout, Jayne King, Jeff Hassmann, Ashlie Flores, Cindi Bluhm, Noe Ortiz, Stephen Barnes, Tommy Ellison, Jo Garcia, Christine Godin, Denise Tolan, Gloria Lopez, Barbara Griest-Devora, Gladys Malave, Don Lucas, Debi Gaitan, Elaine Lang, Wesley Anderson, Christa Emig, Kasey Fielder, Sylvia Lopez, Anthony Quintanilla, Roberto Gonzales, Mary Jane Carreon, Jeannette Jones, Abel Ruiz, Sharla Jones, Natalia Trevino, Gloria Jimenez, Javier Lazo, Sharon Dresser, Ignacio Magaloni, John Grillo, Linda Cuellar, Judy McMillan, Mimi Duvall, William Keith, Dan Smith, Jackie Claunch, Karen Weiskittel, Daniel Bryan, Melissa Marlowe, Beth May, Linda Reeves, Deanna Villarreal, Bernie Zertuche, Bridget Torres, Darryl Nettles, John Seimetz, Edgar Garza, Cheryl Le Gras, and Jimmie Bruce.
