A native of Lansing, Michigan, Smith earned a Bachelor of Music degree from the Boston Conservatory and a Masters of Music at the University of Texas, San Antonio. He has performed in masterclasses with guitarists Oscar Giglia, David Russell, Adam Holzman, David Tannenbaum and Argentine composer Jorge Morel. In 1990 he won the American String Teacher’s Solo Competition and was selected to perform at the ASTA convention.

Daniel has 15 years of teaching experience. He has taught at the Boston Conservatory, Northeastern University, Trinity University, San Antonio College and Saint Philip’s College. Presently he coordinates the music department at Northwest Vista College and is an instructor of guitar, improvisation, music appreciation and fundamentals of music.

Daniel has released two CDs of his own compositions: One and a Half Seasons (1997), a collection of acoustic guitar solos and Catch Phrases (2000), a combination of written and improvised music for cello and guitar.


Beth May

Beth May received her Bachelor’s of Music from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and her Master’s of Music from Yale University. Her compositions have been performed in London, Manhattan, Washington, D.C., Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Texas, and New Hampshire. She is an experienced accompanist, has competed as a piano soloist, and has been active in various choirs for many years. Ms. May has taught music courses at the Yale School of Music, Northwest Vista College and as part of Purdue University’s gifted and talented program, and has worked as a lower primary teacher trainer in Namibia, where she was a Peace Corps volunteer.

Singer, flutist and ethnomusicologist Katharine (Katchie) Cartwright has performed and recorded in the New York City area and internationally since the 1980s. She joined the music faculty at Northwest Vista College in San Antonio, Texas in 2006. She holds a Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology from The City University of New York, with a specialization in improvisational traditions of the world and a dissertation on Quotation and Reference in Jazz Performance: Ella Fitzgerald’s ‘St. Louis Blues.’ A Fulbright Senior Specialist in American Studies and an American Cultural Specialist for the U.S. Department of State, she has received grants for residencies in Greece, Lebanon, Côte d’Ivoire, Peru, and the Dominican Republic. Her albums as co-leader with saxophonist Richard Oppenheim include A Mumbai of the Mind: Ferlinghetti Improvisations, La Faute de la Musique: Songs of John Cage, Live! At the Deer Head Inn, and Soulmates. She serves as Chair of the International Association for Jazz Education’s Sisters in Jazz mentoring program, on the Board of the International Women in Jazz, and is an active member of the International Association of Schools of Jazz. She performs and gives workshops worldwide.

Bill Colangelo's experiences span several computer technology and curricular areas including music, network specialist, LAN administrator, multimedia developer and web master. In the field of music Dr. Colangelo recieved his doctorate in music performance from New York University for his interactive CD-ROM on the music of Italian composer Giacinto Scelsi. He has performed in numerous concerts and festivals in the U.S, Holland, Germany and Italy. His musical work can be heard on the cd Shanghai Blue which is on the BJLF Records label. His performances and recordings have been reviewed by the N.Y Times, N.Y Newsday, The Tokyo Yomiuri, The Taiwan World Journal, Cadence Magazine and Option Magazine. As an Information Technology Specialist he has consulted on and managed technology projects in private industries for corporations such as ITT, American International Group, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Greater N.Y and CBS. He has also done work for schools such as The Dalton School, The Beacon School, Baruch College and N.Y Technical College. He has presented at national confrences on educational technology and been published in the International Society for Technology in Education's Journal for Reasearch in Computing in Education. Bill Colangelo started the Multimedia Specialist Program and designed the curriculum for the Network Administration and Computer Programming Programs at North West Vista College.
