Welcome to Robotics at NVC!
TIER, the Texas Institute for Educational Robotics, a program of Northwest Vista College, was founded to promote robotics as a tool to motivate students to study Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields throughout their education, and to pursue STEM related careers.
TIER accomplishes its mission by providing workshops, competitions, special events and support to educators, schools and community groups participating in youth robotics programs.
Robotics Summer Camps
This is our original program offering which we continue to operate. It began as a two-week robot camp for students. It started as only an elementary and middle school program but we have added a high school aspect. We currently have camps for students who have finished 1st grade and who are going into the 8th grade. Students will spend five full days learning how to program and build small robots and then either conduct an end of camp demonstration or robot tournament. We stress connections to the workforce and conduct a field experience to help make that connection.
- Elementary camp for students currently in grades 1st - 3rd. We use the Lego WeDo robot system and curriculum developed by Lego Education group.
- Elementary camp for students currently in grades 4th-6th. We use the Lego NXT robot system and Robotics Engineering curriculum developed by Carnegie Mellon University’s Robotics Academy.
- Middle school camp is for students currently in grades 7th-8th. We use the Matrix robot system and the RobotC programming environment developed by Carnegie Mellon University’s Robotics Academy.
Scholarships may be offered annually for families that need help paying for Summer Camps. Scholarships usually become available in May. Please call our office to inquire.
