All students may complete a "Request for Services" form in the DSS Office, provide appropriate documentation, and make an appointment with the Coordinator for an intake interview.
Students who believe that they qualify for services are welcome to bring documentation signed by a certified professional to the DSS Office and submit a Request for Services form for evaluation. It is a student’s responsibility for providing current documentation to the DSS Office in order to be considered for special accommodations.
No, disability accommodation services follow federal guidelines and are free of charge to eligible students.
Documentation should be recent and should reflect the use of an adult-level testing instrument for all learning disabilities. Documentation should be no more than five years old for LD, three years old for ADHD, and 6 months old for psychiatric disabilities. The types of information Disability Support Services might request are:
- Documentation of Disability
- Medical Documentation
- Psychological Evaluation
- Academic and/or Intellectual Assessments
- Current or Previous Work Related or Educational Accommodations
Recent high school graduates may be able to obtain Full and Individual Evaluations (not ARD) from their former high schools. Students without current high school documentation may pick up a resource list of private testing services in the San Antonio area. (Please note that private testing services are paid at the student’s expense.)
Once students have requested services and submitted their appropriate documentation, the student will be contacted by phone for an intake review with the Coordinator or a Counselor within 72 business hours. After the intake review is completed, Letters of Accommodation will be ready for student pickup within 24-48 business hours.
Eligible students will be issued a Letter of Accommodation for each instructor which will let the instructor know what accommodations are applicable to the student. Students are responsible for delivering their letter(s) to the instructor(s) of their choice.
Extended test time allows qualified students additional time to take a test. The maximum allowable time is time and a half. (For example, if the regular test time is 1 hour, students with extended time will be allowed 1½ hour.) Eligible students who qualify for ETT:
- may pick up an ETT form from the DSS office or download and print from this link
- provide it to their instructor(s) – instructor will complete and forward the form and test to DSS
- student will contact the DSS office to schedule an appointment for a test time
