Industrial Safety and Manufacturing

Logistics

The skills required in this certificate program prepare the student for an entry-level position in an industry that handles inventories of products, items, merchandise, equipment and other tangible materials that require inventory control. 

Palo Alto College Corporate & Communication Division offers three certification tracks - Entry Level Logistics Clerk, Domestic and International Transportation Clerk, and Import/Export Clerk.

Warehousing Management – 48 Hours

Course Description: Emphasis on physical distribution and total supply chain management. Includes warehouse operations management, hardware and software operations, bar codes, organizational effectiveness, just-in-time, and continuous replenishment.

End-of-Course Outcomes: Discuss total supply chain management and its function in the physical distribution system; identify and demonstrate current technology utilized in warehouse management operations; apply the technology utilized in organizational effectiveness including time and money management and acquisition

Transportation Management – 48 Hours

Course Description: An overview of the principles and practices of transportation and its role in the distribution process. Emphasis on the physical transportation systems involved in the United States as well as on global distribution systems. Topics include carrier responsibilities and services, freight classifications, rates, tariffs, and public policy and regulations. Also includes logistical geography and the development of skills to solve logistical transportation problems and issues.

End-of-Course Outcomes: Discuss principles and practices of the physical transportation system as they pertain to distribution; interpret U.S. and global distribution trends, public policy, and regulations; implement decisions based on logistical and transportation issues and problems; describe U.S. and world geography and how they impact transportation logistics; and solve transportation problems.

Introduction to Logistics – 48 Hours

Course Description: A systems approach to managing activities associated with traffic, transportation, inventory management, warehousing, packaging, order processing, and materials handling.

End-of-Course Outcomes: Explain the terms and how they relate to the overall concept of logistics; explain the legal aspects and regulatory agencies as they relate to logistics management; and demonstrate ability to apply decision making techniques based on time, materials, and space.

Forklifting – 8 Hours

Course Description: Information and training for forklift operators including forklift design, controls and instrumentation, comprehensive pre-use inspection, and forklift stability and factors affecting stability. Includes hands-on training and demonstration of proficiency.

End-of-Course Outcomes: Know forklift design and function, balance, stability triangle, capacity, and visibility requirements; demonstrate knowledge of preventative maintenance; and demonstrate safe operation of forklift including operating requirements, use of controls, steering and drive mechanism, lifting techniques, and safety measure.
