English for Speakers of Other Languages
Program Overview
The Intensive English Program (IEP) is an English immersion course that uses the Focal Skills approach to teaching English. Students in the IEP learn to understand and speak English more quickly than in traditional English programs. Courses are Listening, Reading, Writing, and Immersion. Students practice speaking in every class.
Schedule
All new students take three tests. Then they are placed in classes according to their scores. Each student attends twelve hours of class and eight hours of lab per week, for up to four 4 week sessions per semester (three semester hours for each session for a total of 12 hours per semester). Listening and Reading students have conversation classes two times a week. Writing and Immersion students study grammar two times a week. Classes meet every day, Monday through Friday, between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Students can choose to do their lab hours before or after class.
Communication Skills and College Readiness
Students who successfully complete the entire program are prepared to attend English language college courses. The IEP is also for people who want to learn English for work or any other reason. Therefor, students can register for IEP courses through Continuing Education as well as through college admissions.
