Information Concourse
Electronic Research Resources Available in the Ozuna LRC

The Information Concourse(IC) constitutes the eastern half of the second floor and contains a variety of electronic resources and software, including World Wide Web access, MS Word and MS Excel.  Just ask for help at the Reference Desk in using the electronic and microform  resources.  Especially students, but also staff, faculty, and administrators of Palo Alto College as well as members of the community are welcome to use them. There is no time limit unless someone is waiting; then it is fifteen minutes.  If something is printed out from any computer on the concourse, the copies come out at the Print Desk at the west end of the concourse nearest the stairs. The first 25 pages of printed material are free. After 25 pages, printed pages cost ten cents per page.

Come to the Information  Concourse:

  • To conduct research on the Information Highway  Access to the World Wide Web is available at many workstations.  No password or I.D.s are required to browse for information on the Internet.
  • To do homework assignments  Most software is available to complete homework assignments. Very specialized software is on the second row of computers. If in doubt, see the technician in charge.
  • To use periodical indexes on computers with printers  The UMI Proquest family of databases includes Periodical Abstracts, Business Dateline, and National Newspaper Abstracts as well as Social Sciences Index. Newsbank databases include CD Newsbank, Newsbank Reference Plus, Statbank, Texas Newsfile and Texas Statbank.
  • To check out the U.S.Government Information Center  CD-ROM products include Statistical Abstract of the United States, Census information, agricultural statistics, Government Periodical Index and Marcive GPO Catalog.

Internet Acceptable Use Guidelines

The 3 overriding guidelines for students and other users of the Internet Access workstations in the Learning Resources Center are:

1. The PRIMARY function of the Information Concourse and all public access workstations in the Ozuna Learning Resources Center is LIBRARY RESEARCH directly related to classroom assignments originating from the faculty at Palo Alto College. Priority will always be given to currently enrolled students at Palo Alto College.

2. Every Internet Access user is entitled to the same privacy, and freedom from censorship, afforded him/her as when reading library print materials.

3. Internet Access must not be used for any activity which is defined by federal or state statute as illegal or which would inhibit, restrict or otherwise prevent another LRC user from successfully completing his/her research or assignment.

These general guidelines are in place to promote the mission, role, and function of the LRC as it relates to student success at Palo Alto College. Separate guidelines exist for computer use and Internet Access in the CHILDREN'S LIBRARY.

(Originally formulated for in-house implementation, 1998.)
