The Mathematics, Engineering, and Science
Achievement (MESA) Center, is a national student success program founded
in California in the 1970s. It was
brought to San Antonio College in 2007 and is located in the Chance Academic
Center Room 204. The center exists to
serve all Science, Technology, Engineering and Math
(STEM) students and equip them for success by providing necessary materials,
workshops, degree-planning, and guidance in seeking scholarships, internships,
and four-year degrees. Membership for
the study center is free and additional benefits include priority computer
usage, evening and weekend access to the MESA Center, meeting places for study
groups, tutoring services for STEM courses, and Undergraduate Research and
Internship opportunities. The center
also serves as a meeting place for many STEM student organizations and is a
great place to meet professionals and students in our field. If you would like to learn more about the
center, it’s hours of operation, current events, affiliated student
organizations, and opportunities available to STEM students, please visit our
website at www.alamo.edu/sac/mesa
or stop by the center and to meet with the MESA Coordinator, Miss Garza.
The GeoSpot is located in the Chemistry and Geology Building (CG), Room 003 at San Antonio College. The Chemistry-Geology Building was built in 1961 and received a full renovation that was completed in 2009. Along with the renovation came the task of rebuilding the Geology Museum (GeoSpot) to have displays based on the courses offered. The faculty, staff, and volunteers of the Natural Sciences Department have built these displays for students to study and visitors to enjoy. The GeoSpot is a work in progress and is home to the newly re-founded Geological Society of San Antonio College. There are many specimens on display and collaborative plans for more interactive displays. Currently available to students are hand sample sets of rocks, minerals, and fossils, to study as well as a microscope for closer look. With the GeoSpot located in the basement of the CG, the atmosphere is perfectly suited for studying. The GeoSpot also offers Earth Sciences tutoring 19 hours per week for the aspiring geologist needing some encouragement. Call 210-486-0045 for more information because the hours of operation vary per semester depending on staff availability.
