Texas Success

The Texas Success Initiative is a program enacted by the Texas Legislature designed to ensure that all students attending college have attained the academic skills in reading, writing and mathematics that indicate the student's readiness to perform enroll in freshman-level academic course work. Therefore, each entering undergraduate student at San Antonio College is required to be assessed prior to enrollment.  Determination of when a student is ready to perform freshman-level academic coursework is on an individual basis according to the needs of the student.

Assessment is done by an assessment instrument, ACCUPLACER, ASSET, THEA (formerly TASP test), to determine course placement in reading, writing and mathematics.

Although the following students are exempt from state mandatory assessment, course placement assessment is required.  The following students shall be exempt from the requirements of this title:

  1. Students who obtain a minimum ACT score of 23 with a minimum of 19 on both of the English and math tests.  Scores may not be older than three years.
  2. Students who obtained am minimum SAT composite score of 1070 with a minimum of 500 on both the verbal and math test.  Scores may not be older than three years.
  3. Students who have tested and performs on the eleventh grade exit-level Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) with a minimum TAKS scores of 2200 in math and in the English language arts, and writing subsection score of 3.  Scores may not be older than three years.
  4. Students who have graduated with an associate or baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education.
  5. Students who have completed college-level coursework at a private or out-of state institution.
  6. Students who have met readiness standards at another Texas public institution of higher education.
  7. Students who are enrolled in a certificate program of one year or less (level-one certificates).
  8. Students who are active duty in the armed forces of the United States, the Texas National Guards or reserve component of the armed forces for at least three years preceding enrollment.
  9. Students who were honorably discharged, retired or released from a military component of the United States after August 1, 1990.

Basic Skills Enrichment Programs

Students may participate in non-course-based remediation (NCBR) through the Basic Skills Enrichment Programs (MLC 712).  The courses are held according to the regular class schedule and are non-graded.  There are no college credit hours attached to the courses; therefore, they will not count toward number of hours needed for financial aid.

WHO WOULD BENEFIT FROM NCBR CLASSES?

  • Students who need to pass THEA or need to strengthen writing or basic algebra skills before continuing in the regular curriculum.
  • Professional and Technical Education students who need to meet math exit competencies for degree requirements.
