Students applying for a degree should consult with their counselor/advisor about degree competencies when developing a degree plan.
Associate in Arts (AA) and Associate in Science (AS) Degrees
These degrees are designed as the equivalent of the first half of a baccalaureate degree. Both are general plans and may or may not satisfy the requirements of a specific transfer university. Students desiring to transfer should seek one of these degrees after consultation with the SAC Counseling Office and the transfer college's advisors. In keeping with Texas State law, students who complete the 48 hours credits of the San Antonio College core curriculum are assured that the core will transfer to any Texas public college or university; in such instances, the San Antonio College core will be substituted for the core requirements of the receiving institution. Care should be taken in the selection of the math and science courses to ensure that those courses also meet requirements of the proposed major at the transfer institution.
Associate of Arts in Teaching
The Associate of Arts in Teaching (AAT) is for individuals who have a desire to enter the field of education as a teacher, teacher's aide, school administrator, counselor or some aspect of child/adolescent development.
Students are advised to continue toward their Baccalaureate of Arts Degree in Education a four-year degree granting institution. The AAT degree is THECB-approved and is fully transferrable to all Texas public universities that offer applicable Baccalaureate Degrees leading to initial Texas teacher certification. Students should consult with an advisor and with the university to which they plan to transfer for additional information regarding specific content area concentrations.
(from Ecatalog)
Associate degree based on a Transfer Agreement
If a student completes the first two years of the curriculum identified in a 2 + 2 transfer/articulation agreement, with a minimum of 60 applicable degree hours, they will have satisfied the requirements for an associate degree, provided that the transfer plan includes the state-required 6 hours of history and 6 hours of government, as outlined in the SAC core curriculum. Texas law mandates that the completed core at one public Texas institution will transfer and take the place of the core at the receiving Texas college or university. Students should work closely with an advisor to obtain information about existing agreements.
Associate in Applied Science (AAS) Degree
This degree is designed to teach specific professional/technical skills. The requirements for each major in the Associate in Applied Science (AAS) Degree are clearly shown in the curriculum offerings in this bulletin. Students seeking such a degree should become familiar with the specific required courses in the appropriate curriculum. The AAS Degree may transfer all or in part to senior colleges and universities. Contact the Transfer Center, located in the Counseling Department, or the department advisor for specific transfer information. (2003-2004 SAC Bulletin)
