Required Texts and
Material:
Understanding
the Bible by Stephen L. Harris (Seventh Edition), McGraw
Hill, ISBN #0-07-296548-7
A Bible.
Many of the translations are appropriate, but paraphrase versions are now
acceptable. We'll discuss editions online using the text as a starting place; a
variety of versions is good so that we can compare translations and the reasons
for the differences. Professor Britt will use several translations during the
class.
Some type of
current MLA Style guide (your choice), but you must have one to avoid
plagiarism
URLs for
purchasing books online: San Antonio College Bookstore: http://www.efollett.com/ (but if you are purchasing the book to
arrive by the first week of class, you may order it online to save money).
*Note from Professor Britt: Please do not be
intimidated by all the readings and assignments in this syllabus. Because this
course is offered online, I have to try to give you all the information at one
time. This information will then be broken down into smaller bits within
Blackboard Vista. The course is time intensive, but I know there will be times
you will get behind in the reading. You must turn the papers in on time, but
you can catch up with the reading later. Trying to cover the entire Bible in
one semester is a daunting task, and I’ve done my best to present you with an
overview. If you will at least read the Key Themes of each book in Harris, you
will have the overview and after the end of the semester, you can return to the
readings. The lectures will guide you through the understanding of the Bible,
and you will read as much of the Bible as you can. Do not drop this course
before considering its benefits to you in broad knowledge of the basis of much
of Western literature and thought. Give the course your best and you will
benefit. The writing assignments may seem daunting, but each time I ask a class
at the conclusion if I should drop or change assignments, they overwhelmingly
tell me that they learned more through their research than they ever thought
possible, and the literary responses were fun. So I know this course is
difficult, but also know that you will be rewarded if you enroll and complete
it. Contact me with problems and questions at any time. I do not give any
tests, just two short research papers (5-7 pages) and the 7 short creative
writing assignments called Literary Responses. Attendance and participation
count and enhance your learning as well as your classmates’ learning in the
course.
Final Exam:
.085
Internet class: will discuss their research before noon Tuesday, December 8,
2009.

Plagiarism is the use of source material without giving credit. This error is serious and can lead to unpleasant consequences. In the past few years, college presidents and members of government as well as journalists have lost their jobs because they plagiarized, either deliberately or inadvertently. Professor Britt assumes you know how to credit all source material, whether quoted or paraphrased. Those skills are taught in English 1301 and 1302, Composition courses. If you are unsure of what or how to credit sources, ask for help either from Professor Britt or the tutors in the Writing Center. No excused are accepted for plagiarism and students will receive no credit for any paper with plagiarism.
