Pre-Test and Tests

This page provides an overview of the pre-tests and tests and then offers a list first for one, and then the other. It also covers the procedures to be aware of while taking a Pre-test or test.

To confirm that each student has mastered the course content, she or he will take

  • one or more pre-tests over each week's chapters or readings.
  • A test over each of the major divisions of the course.
  • A comprehensive objective test at the end of the term.
  • A final consisting of the long essay.

All pre-tests and tests are online in WebCT, the electronic classroom for this course.

Pre-tests

Each pre-test is an opportunity to confirm learning. All the ones in this class are based on the study guide questions on the course web site. The instructor created both the study guides, pre-tests, and tests using the SQ3R method. They draw attention to literary or composition terminology and concepts vital to completing the essays successfully.

All but one of the pre-tests are objective. The pre-test questions are matching definitions and multiple choice. Many of them work on the knowledge and comprehension levels, but the ones that seem harder and/or are worth more points work at the analysis level and above.

Although the pre-tests are scored as percentages of 100, they count as attendance only.

  • Each student may take each objective pre-test up to three (3) times to use it as a study aid for the tests.
  • Most of the test questions come from the pre-tests.

The one subjective pre-test is the first email attachment.

  • It is intended to give practice on writing to the specifications of current professional writing standards.
  • The email attachment is required to preserve the MLA format without which no essay can pass.

This assignment gives students a chance to

  • see how well they have mastered the overall characteristics required of all writing
  • get comfortable with the process of sending an essay by email attachment (NOT pasted into the message box)
  • see how the teacher grades for the first time on an assignment that is graded like an essay, but counts less.

Each pre-test below is also listed in the calendar week in which it is due.

 Procedures -- How to Take
Pre-tests in WebCT

All pre-tests and tests are in the WebCT electronic classroom environment.

How To Take The Pre-test

  • The time and testing factors may seem threatening. Don't let WebCT intimidate you. The pre-tests count only as attendance and every student gets three chances at each one. By the time students have to take the first test, most feel comfortable with the system
  • All of the questions have the one best answer which earns 100% of the points possible for it. However, a few give partial credit when the answer is one right option, but not the best.
  • After selecting the right answer, click on Save Answer
Warning -- Go easy on the wheel if your mouse has one. Scrolling a mouse wheel can change your answer accidentally. Be sure you are looking at the option you have chosen when you click Save Answer. If you spin the mouse wheel before saving, the answer will change without your meaning to, and the system will record it as your selection. Be careful to save the one you want. If you save the wrong one, click on the right one and save again to revise it.
  • Do not click on the next question until you have saved the current one.
  • If a dialogue box pops up while you are taking the test at any point, click on OK and continue working if it lets you, regardless of what it says.
  • If you are not quite finished after the time is up, the program should let you continue, but will report the score at the time you finished.
  • When you are through, be sure to do two things:

1. Click on Finish and all the steps to submit it. It may say you have not answered several questions. If so, answer and save them again. One time when I took it, it told me I had not answered five questions, but it lied. It had accepted all my answers except one I had not saved. So be sure to click on Save Answer for each one it lists if you have to.

2. Click View Results to see how you did immediately. The program is set to report only the score to students.

  • AOL and WebCT -- If you access the Web through AOL, to minimize problems, open AOL and after you get in, open Explorer or Netscape to access the Pre-test. The WebCT techs tell me this helps minimize technical glitches.

If problems crop up, let me know, and we’ll make adjustments as necessary.
