Total cost of project is estimated at $12 million. The
Scobee renovation is $5 million, which has already been obtained through the
Alamo Community College District Maintenance Tax notes. A $7
million fund-raising goal includes the Challenger Learning Center and the
endowment for perpetual funding.
Challenger Center will engage students and teachers in
dynamic, hands-on exploration and discovery opportunities through simulated
space missions and will serve as an integral part of the college’s mission of
narrowing the skills gap by preparing the San Antonio workforce for aerospace
engineering, science and technology jobs.
The remodeled Scobee Planetarium Complex will feature a
renovated theater with a new domed screen, new lighting and sound system, and
expanded seating arrangement. The observatory telescope will move to a third
story with an adjoining ‘Star Party’ deck. The new forward facing reclining
seats will provide best views of the simulated night sky. The facility will also feature a museum lobby
exhibition area, gift shop, and classrooms.
