Kinesiology/Dance Department Syllabi

The mission of the Kinesiology Department is to promote the goal of health and total well-being to its students through the dissemination of knowledge primarily through one-hour activity courses related to physical fitness, lifetime sports and dance. Additionally, the department provides theory courses for the initial training of educators and provides service to the community.

A degree from many senior colleges requires four semesters of Kinesiology activity courses for graduation. A student should confer with the senior college of their choice about graduation requirements. An Associates degree from San Antonio College requires two hours of Kinesiology or Dance.

The Kinesiology/Dance Department offers:

1. Activity courses in relation to physical fitness, lifetime sports and dance.
2. Activity courses to meet the requirements for an Associates Degree at San Antonio College
3. Theory courses for a major or minor in Health or Kinesiology.
4. Theory courses as electives for majors in related fields.

Recreational use of the facilities is limited. See department schedule for more information. Intramural sports activities are offered through the Office of Student Life.

This course combines hi-lo impact dance aerobics, step aerobics, cardio kickboxing and circuit/interval type workouts to assist in the reduction of body fat and promote cardio respiratory and muscular endurance. Students will use body bars, free weights, resistance balls and other specialized equipment. Nutritional principles are discussed as well.

This course combines boxing and martial arts techniques into an exhilarating form of cardiorespiratory, muscular strength, and muscular endurance training. Additionally, the course will focus on improving flexibility.

KINE 2103 Cardio Kickboxing II (1-1-2)

This course is designed to use intermediate techniques of cardio kickboxing skills to improve cardio respiratory endurance, muscular strength and endurance, anaerobic threshold, and body composition. Training will consist of intermediate to advanced techniques in cardio kickboxing and contact strikes using gloves and punching bags. Traditional activities such as calisthenics, resistance training, jump rope training, and core muscle training will be included. Principles of interval training will be taught as well as theories of weight management, chronic and acute disease prevention, stress management, and basic anatomy and kinesiology.

KINE 1104 Hi-Lo Aerobic Dancing (1-1-2)

This course introduces students to different types of floor based aerobic movements including both hi-impact and low-impact movements. Classes will primarily focus on the enhancement of cardiorespiratory endurance and often include choreographed movements set to music. The course focus will also include the enhancement of muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, and body composition.

This class is for competent swimmers who want to use swimming as a cardiovascular fitness activity. Training regimen for fitness, endurance swimming, and competition will be learned and practiced. KINE 2150 Aquatic Conditioning II (1-1-2) prerequisite of KINE 1150 or the ability to swim 500 yards crawl stroke.

This course is a continuation of Aquatic Conditioning I and is for advanced lap swimmers, master swimmers, tri-athletes, and competitive swimmers. DANC 1153 Flamenco Dance I (1-1-2)

This course will introduce students to beginning principles of Flamenco movements to include “Compas” in a variety of Flamenco forms, “Palmas” or hand clapping, and “Taconeo” footwork to develop strength and speed, “Braceo” hand and arm movements unique to Flamenco, and the use of castanets.

DANC 2151 Dance Performance III (1-1-2) prerequisite of DANC 1151 and 1152 or KINE 1172 and 1173 or consent of instructor
