Student Multimedia Lab (SML)
Check-Out / Loan of Equipment Policy
(updated: 03/07/2007)
The Student Multimedia Lab (SML) loans media equipment to actively
enrolled San Antonio College students for academic-related projects
(i.e. course assignments, research). The following is a general
explanation of the SML's loan policy which serves to minimize
the liabilities associated with such loans.
The SML reserves the right to update the policy as deemed necessary
and appropriate.
Borrowers:
" Media equipment loans are only available to current SAC
students in good standing, with a valid SAC ID and a 2nd form
of photo identification (i.e. a driver's license or a military
ID). "In good standing" means no overdue materials through
any ACCD library and no current fines.
Note: A copy of both ID's will be kept on file in the SML office
throughout each semester.
" A Media Loan Authorization form, signed by the student
and a SAC faculty member, is required before any loans can be
made to the student. This form, along with the copy of both ID's,
will become part of the student's file which must be updated each
semester.
" SML media equipment is strictly for academic use (i.e.
course-related assignments/projects, research) and not for extracurricular
activities beyond the scope of the course curriculum.
" Each loan is processed per equipment and made on the basis
that the student has no equipment currently on loan. Only one
type of equipment will be loaned out per student at one time.
The Loan Process:
" Media equipment can be checked out by a student at any
time during the SML's hours of operation.
" Media equipment is checked out on a first-come, first-serve
basis. Equipment may be re-checked on a limited basis, depending
on availability and demand.
" All media equipment will be inspected by SML personnel
to ensure proper functionality prior to the release, and upon
the return, of all equipment.
" The media equipment check-out/check-in process may take
approximately ten to fifteen minutes. Students are urged to plan
accordingly.
" The SML reserves the right to recall media equipment for
just cause.
Loan Period:
" Laptops can be checked out for weekend use. All other equipment
can only be checked out and used Monday - Friday (no weekend or
holiday use).
" The following table lists the media equipment available
for check out, along with corresponding loan periods and usage
times:
MEDIA EQUIPMENT LOAN PERIOD WEEKEND/HOLIDAY USE
Laptop 48 hours Yes (limited)
Digital Camera 24 hours No
Camcorder 24 hours No
Media Cart Same Day No
Fines & Liability:
" There is no charge for media equipment loans. There are,
however, fees assessed if the equipment is returned late. Students
should be aware of these fees which are listed in the Media Loan
Authorization form.
" In the event of theft, loss or damage, the student is
fully responsible for all costs associated with the repair or
replacement of the media equipment and any software/accessories
included in the loan.
" The repair/replacement costs will vary depending on the
media equipment. For high-ticket equipment (i.e. laptops, camcorders,
digital cameras) these costs may range from $600 - $2,000.
" Failure to pay any late fees or repair/replacement costs
will result in a HOLD being placed on the student's transcript.
" The Student Multimedia Lab bears no responsibility for
any files saved or downloaded onto a laptop by a student. All
files which are not the property of the SML are deleted as part
of the maintenance process.
