Goals of the Puentes Partnership

Goal #1
To increase student achievement in mathematics and science courses.

Goal #2
To increase the development and implementation of effective instructional strategies for all students including interventions targeted to reach Hispanic and other at-risk students.

Goal #3
To improve STEM instructors’ content knowledge in their field and their ability to use new delivery methods to reach a changing population of students.

Goal #4
To develop more rigorous mathematics, science and/or technology curricula that are integrated and aligned with state and local academic content standards and with the standards expected for postsecondary study in engineering, mathematics, and science.

About the
Puentes
Partnership

Puentes, the Spanish word for bridges, is a partnership program to improve access to the Baccalaureate for South Texans through Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) teaching and learning Innovation.

Puentes is a two year project funded by the Department of Education through the CCRAA HSI Cooperative Grant program. This project focuses on:

  • increasing the number of Hispanic and other under-represented and under-served students attaining degrees in the fields of science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) and
  • developing model transfer and articulation agreements between San Antonio College and Texas State University in the STEM fields.

San Antonio College and Texas State University have formed a partnership to build bridges (Puentes) to help increase the number of students enrolled in postsecondary STEM programs.

Sylvia San Miguel
Puentes Senior Secretary

Sylvia San Miguel is the Title V Puentes Grant Senior Secretary at San Antonio College.  Sylvia’s responsibilities include procuring supplies, coordinating all direct pays and requisitions in banner for all the Title V projects. She regularly attends Grant meetings here and at TxState University with Barbara Knotts, who is the Director of the Puentes grant. She has been at San Antonio College for over a year. Before joining SAC, Sylvia worked at World Savings for 7 years in their billing department and Bausch & Lomb for 11 years in their customer service dept.
Sylvia obtained her Office Administration diploma from Texas Careers in 2002.  She has been married for 39 years has 2 children and 3 grandchildren who she spoils as often as she can.

“Working here at SAC has truly been a wonderful learning experience”.
