Funded Projects

Professional Development for STEM Teachers

The STEM workshops and institutes are designed to help faculty aid students in developing the skills necessary to be qualified, productive engineers and technologists in the 21st century. By September 2009, at least 30 SAC faculty members and 10 Texas State faculty members will have been trained in best practices in teaching STEM coursework to Hispanic and other under-represented and under-served populations.

Renovation Projects

MathSpace Center

The Center will occupy the space currently occupied by six classrooms in the math building, including three now used for tutoring, which will be renovated, rewired, and furnished to create a versatile and inviting space for student learning.  After renovation, there will be two tutoring spaces, with one-on-one tutoring stations separated by moveable walls, one for Developmental Math and one for STEM majors, two computer-based instruction/study spaces, two small group/study rooms, and a staff office.  In addition, two math classrooms will be modernized to include SMART classroom facilities.

GreenSpot/Greenhouse

Another facility for the Biology Department will be the construction of a greenhouse.  The GreenSpot will be 20-feet by 27-feet greenhouse with tempered glass, evaporative cooling, gas heat, air flow fans, motorized outlet shutters, a micro-processor-based greenhouse controller, and an ADA-approved entrance.  Once completed, the GreenSpot students enrolled in General Biology courses as well as Biology Club students will grow plants for sale in the community and educating the community on Eco-Friendly gardening.  The greenhouse will be located between the NACH and Chance buildings.
