Redesigning Coursework:
Improve Retention in STEM Courses at SAC

Biological Sciences

Biol 2401 – Human Anatomy and Physiology
Rafael Torres, Professor,
Full Time Faculty Biology Department

This course is taught by Computer Assisted Instruction (known as DryLab) in conjunction with traditional lecture demonstration and traditional lab (or  WetLab) methods. The DryLab and WetLab are integral parts of the course. After a DryLab session, there is a Brainstorming session of questions-answers face-to-face regarding the topic covered in the DryLab session. A website is available to students for handouts and practice tests. The practice tests’ average accounts for a fifth lecture exam grade. Most classroom tests include compulsory essay questions for bonus points. Anatomy and Physiology tutors in the BioSpot are essential part of the course.

Biol 2406 - Environmental Biology
Robyn McGilloway, Assistant Professor Ph.D.,
Biology Department

This course was chosen from several biology courses to be well suited for on-line presentation.  In the past, this course was a traditional lecture based course without a laboratory component.  The availability of this biology course facilitates San Antonio College’s ability to provide a completely on-line degree.
This course is completely on-line with a laboratory component.  Lecture material is presented in Power Point slideshows with Natural Reader software supplying the audio portion of the lecture. Power Point files with the audio portion in mp3 format allows students to download files to their personal i-pods or departmental i-pods.  These files will be made available at the BioSpot website.  Laboratory sessions are a combination of outdoor activities and webpage exploration.  Class exams are also given online. A chat room is available to allow students instant feedback regarding assignments and exams.

Biol 2420 - Microbiology and Pathology
Teanna Staggs, Associate Professor Ph.D.,
Chairperson Biology Department

Microbiology and Pathology is a pre-nursing level microbiology course at San Antonio College.  To abbreviate time on campus for students, reduce the impact of lack of space for a high demand course and to take advantage of current technologies, the redesign of this traditional lecture/lab course into a blended course seemed prudent.  The new blended offering uses Blackboard Vista as a platform to deliver the lecture content.  The essential hands-on laboratory remains face-to-face in delivery.  Lecture delivery includes lecture modules developed using SoftChalk 5.0 which allows lecture notes to be delivered as fully integrated websites within BBV.  Each module includes notes, images (both computer graphic and photography), YouTube videos, textbook animations, custom animations produced in the Biology Department using funds from this grant, movie files, MP3 Audio lecture files, case studies and NCLEX Nursing Board exam review questions.  In addition each module includes quiz popper questions embedded within the content which upon completion by the student, results in an updated score automatically added to the BBV grade book.  Each module is also supplemented with vocabulary, crossword activities to engrain that vocabulary, and study questions.  Students may also check out Zunes (MP4 players) from the department which are pre-loaded with lecture content developed by the department.

Mathematics

Math 0300 - Elementary Algebra
Dhammika Nanayakkara, Associate Professor,
Department of Mathematics and Computer Science

After teaching many remedial and college·level courses, it is clear to see t hat the
students are not successfu l, since they do not have a sol id understanding of the basic math skills. Therefore, I selected this cou rse for student-centered pedagogies, since it is the first cou rse offered in the remed iation sequence. Math 0300 should be the foundation for all other courses, yet so many students who place into Math 0300 have a wide variety of math deficiencies that cannot clearly be focused on in a traditiona l lecture class.

Trying to teach the same math skill to the entire class, when each student has a
different level of mathematical knowledge, has not been very successful for this course. For this reason, I have decided to redesign Math 0300 to incorporate AlEKS. AlEKS is web-based software that utilizes Artificial Intelligence to guide each student along an individualized learning path and leads them to work on math topics that they are ready to learn based on their initial assessment. In order to incorporate AlEKS into a Math 0300 course, I will lecture 1 hour per week and the other 2 hours, the students will work on completing the topics listed in the ALEKS Pie Graph.

In order to keep track of my students' success (outcomes), Al EKS will provide me with
dynamic reports that will monitor each individual student's learning progress and the overall class performance. Al EKS will also allow each student the ability to take control of their own learning, build their confidence, and increase their success in future courses.

Math 0302 - Elementary Algebra
Lorraine Lopez, Assistant Professor,
Department of Mathematics and Computer Science

Elementary Algebra was my first selection for course redesign.  Since many of our students at San Antonio College begin in our developmental sequence, I would like to introduce a new methodology in those particular courses.  I have decided to redesign one of my Elementary Algebra courses by incorporating software.  My students will be using a linear-based software called MyMathLab.  Although homework, quizzes, and exams will be taken online using this software, the course will actually be designated as a hybrid course.  One day will be spent in a classroom lecturing and the next class period will be spent in the lab either working on homework, quizzes, or exams.  All created assignments and assessments are randomly generated; thus, every student will have a different set of problems every time they log in.  I would like input from the students to see if the software improves learning and understanding of concepts.  One of the benefits of using this software is students only need to purchase a code and they have access to all resources including the corresponding e-book.  This is cost effective for the students since purchasing a code is customarily less expensive than purchasing a hard copy of the text.  By the end of the semester, I am hoping to determine whether this software will help our students become more successful in our developmental courses.

Math 0303 – Intermediate Algebra
Rachid Makroz, Math Faculty
Department of Mathematics and Computer Science

I teach this course once or twice a year, I have been teaching the same way semester after semester, using or as I caU passing the Chalk. Even though this technique doesn't require a lot preparation and can be some times productive. However Technology has always influenced how we teach mathematics: not too long ago, hand-held calculators made slide rules and tables of logarithms obsolete, and simultaneously extended the range of problems accessible to students. Similarly, powerful computers and brilliant software now offer opportunities to explain classical mathematical concepts in a fresh and dynamic way.
This course explores powerful mathematical software such as My Math lab and
examines the way it changes how mathematics is done and taught. Emphasis is on hands-on projects both inside and outside of class. In this course the students will do most of the work at the lab using My Math lab, and all the information will be available and accessible from any where. The students will be provided with all the tools needed to succeed. For example if a student do not understand a section the student can login to my math lab, then click on e-book and read the summary for that section, if that is not enough the student can click on multimedia textbook section to access video clips, animations, and practice exercises This course will strive to equip the students with the know-how of the several examples of prominent mathematics software, as well as to inspire them to do the homework using Technology.
