Welcome to the Murguia Learning Institute

In Fall 2003, San Antonio College established a college-wide Professional Development Intiative, the Murguia Learning Institute (MLI). The intent of the MLI is to help faculty learn about and implement best instructional practices and student support strategies for improving student success. In the fall the MLI is offered to new full-time tenure track faculty and in the spring the focus is on full-time tenured faculty from department specific disciplines to receive instruction in teaching best pactices. In Spring 2006, evening and weekend training began for adjunct and continuing education instructors.

Starting with 38 new full-time tenure track faculty in Fall 2005 the MLI has offered classes to different faculty groups every Fall and Spring semester. The MLI has grown from offering new full-time tenure track faculty and discipline specific faculty classes to including adjunct and continuing education faculty. The MLI has expanded its offering by creating a Chairs Academy for current departemnt chairs. Displine specific groups that have participated in the MLI are the Math and History departments. This semester the Counseling department is participating in the MLI. The Chairs Academy began in Fall 2008 and offers current chairs presentations from September through May on topics selected by the chairs.

In Fall 2005, Dr. Johnnie Rosenauer, Director of the MLI successfully brought graduate course work to San Antonio College. Initially, courses were on College Teaching and Higher Education Administration from the University of Texas at San Antonio. Starting in Fall 2008, Dr. Rosenauer began a relationship with Texas A & M to bring a four course College Teaching Certificate offering one graduate class per semester.

Since its inception in Fall 2005, the MLI has had 275 faculty participate who have taught 44, 944 students.
