850 graduates walk
stage at San Antonio College’s 84th graduation
SAN ANTONIO, TX (May 14, 2012) – Dr. Laura Rendón,
educator and researcher at UT-San Antonio, was recognized as the Outstanding
Former Student for 2011-2012
at San Antonio College’s 84th commencement Ceremony Saturday at Freeman
Coliseum. More than 850 students walked the stage to receive Associate degrees
and certificates from Dr. Robert E. Zeigler, college president; Dr. Jessica
Howard, vice president of academic affairs; and Dr. Robert Vela, vice president
of student affairs.
Approximately 11,000 people attended the commencement, which
was also marked the first
graduating class for Travis Early College High School. Travis students earn college credit
while in high school and 48 completed their first two years of college and
received Associate degrees.
Dr. Rendón, a native of Laredo, graduated from SAC in
1968. Currently a professor
with the Department of Educational Leadership & Policy Studies at UTSA, Dr.
Rendón is also co-director for the Center for Research and Policy in Education.
She told the commencement audience about her own struggles
to achieve her educational goals.
“For all the parents and families who are here today, I
extend my congratulations. The
success of one child is the success of the entire family. Congratulations to all the families who
are here today!
“I am deeply humbled and honored to receive the Outstanding
Former Student Award from San Antonio College. I am proud that I graduated from
SAC. I am one of you!” she said.
This year there were two student speakers for SAC. Rebecca
Henry, a member of the award-winning speech team, and Andrew De Luna,
representing the first graduating class of Travis Early College High School.
Henry told the audience that she originally planned to
attend a different college and be an athletic trainer, but changed her mind and
came to SAC to become a teacher.
“I don’t know about you, but it seems like in every
conversation I have revolving around college or what I’m studying, somebody has
to comment on the fact that it’s going to be really hard to find a job out
there once we graduate.
“When we get out there, we may not find the exact career we
have worked so hard to obtain, but in these times especially, the message is
clear.... we must remain flexible and embrace change. And what a great start we
have made by attending San Antonio college where we have been granted the
opportunity to sample different career paths to get an idea of what route to
take,” Henry said.
The commencement was videotaped and will air at 5 p.m. May
19 and May 20 on the Education Channel, (Ch.98/Time Warner, Ch. 21/Grande Communications, and Ch. 99
AT&T-Uverse.)
