SAN ANTONIO, TX (Aug. 20, 2012) – San Antonio College and the Alamo Colleges marked the 2012 convocation today with guest speakers, awards, the Palo Alto Mariachi band, a new advertising campaign, and a presentation by the SAC Speech Team at McAllister Auditorium.

“Passing the Torch” was the theme of the Alamo Colleges Faculty Convocation. The award-winning SAC Team performed a skit about students at the five Alamo Colleges and offered an Olympic theme (“Our Torch is Lit”).

Dr. Robert Zeigler welcomed his fellow college presidents Dr. Adena Williams Loston (St. Philips), Dr. Eric Reno (Northeast Lakeview), Dr. Ana Guzman (Palo Alto) and Dr. Jackie Claunch (Northwest Vista). Board of Trustee members in attendance included Joe Alderete Jr., Denver McClendon, Yvonne Katz, Anna Bustamante and James Rindfuss.

Dr.   Bruce Leslie, Alamo Colleges Chancellor, introduced a new ad campaign that emphasizes faculty. “We have a faculty for reshaping futures” is   the theme for   print, radio and television advertisements; in addition there is a web site (www.alamofaculty.org).  Videos will be on the digital signs around campus along with the “Stay the course” campaign, designed to encourage students to complete college – whether it is transferring to a four-year university or graduating from Alamo Colleges.

Guest speaker Dr. Vincent Tinto, Syracuse University, took the stage to discuss student retention and learning communities. “Your students are our future,” he said.  Dr. Tinto’s presentation included community college students talking about what worked to help them succeed.
