Did You Know?

  • Groundskeepers spend 60 hours a week just cleaning up cigarette butts.

  • During the 2003-2004 academic year, open forums were held to discuss the issue of smoking on campus.

  • Of 422 students surveyed, 70% supported smoking restrictions (including 39.6% of smokers).A phased-in elimination of all smoking on campus was also unanimously approved by the faculty and staff representatives.

  • The American Cancer Society says tobacco use causes 1 out of 5 deaths per year in the U.S.

  • The College Tobacco Prevention Resource says 10% of current college students will die of smoking-related illnesses and that smoking is a primary cause of fires, costing schools $5.9 million in direct property damage in 2002.
  • Smoking at San Antonio College is Prohibited:
    Smoking is not permitted on the San Antonio College Campus or any other ACCD campus.  This includes parking lots and any other property owned by the Alamo Community Colleges.

  • Enforcement:
    The Department of Public Safety will:

1. Issue citations to those in violation of the policy.  Citations require an $12 payment.

2.  Repeated violations will result in further disciplinary action.

  • Background:
    During the 2003-2004 academic year, the students, faculty and staff discussed a smoking policy in public forums and agreed to prohibit smoking on the San Antonio College campus for health reasons.

  • Overview:
