disABILITY Support Services (dSS) at San Antonio College assists students with documented disabilities to independently achieve their educational goals by providing reasonable and appropriate accommodations. dSS facilitates access to college programs, services and activities in the most integrated setting appropriate.
In order to qualify for services, a student must provide dSS with up-to-date verification of the disability. An interview with a dSS counselor begins the process. dSS coordinates such services as registration assistance, testing accommodations, interpreters for the hearing impaired, note takers, mobility assistance, readers, scribes (writers), on-site computer lab with adaptive technology, student development classes (Orientation) dedicated to Learning Disabled (LD), Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and hearing impaired students, as well as adapted classroom material, financial aid advisement, transfer information and career planning.
In accordance with federal legislation (Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and The Americans with Disabilities Act), San Antonio College has authorized the disABILITY Support Services ( dSS) Program to act on its behalf to receive and evaluate medical documentation of students with disabilities who request accommodations to achieve equal access to the College's programs and services. The Counseling faculty in dSS authorize accommodations that would be considered reasonable and appropriate given each student's supporting documentation. Confidential letters regarding authorized accommodations are then provided to students who request accommodations to take to each of their instructors. It then becomes the instructor's responsibility to insure the authorized accommodations are provided. If a faculty member feels the authorized accommodation(s) are not reasonable or appropriate given the essential elements of the course, he/she should contact the dSS Coordinator at 486-0025. If students request accommodations without the letter of authorization from dSS, they should be referred to that office (CAC 124).
