Partial Solar Eclipse Celebration   Monday, August 21st  11:40am - 2:38pm

Monday, August 21, 2017 is being called the "Great American Eclipse" as the event's path of totality bisects the country from Oregon to South Carolina.  The last total eclipse visible in the continental United States occurred in 1979 and the next one occurs in 2024.  On August 21st, San Antonio will experience a partial eclipse.

The Scobee Education Center will host a series of free activities in the middle of the day to celebrate and educate for this unique event. 1,000 special solar filter glasses have been purchased to distribute, while supplies last.  Only program participants will be provided these free resources and we are asking that families share the glasses to ensure safe use for children and broader participation.  SAC Student Life, Flamingo Rey's Island Ice and MWS BBQ & Catering LLC are all joining the Scobee Team with tasty end of the summer treats for purchase.  If you or your community group is interested in participating as the lead for a related activity in support of this event, please, contact Scobee Planetarium Coordinator Michelle Risse at or 210-486-0101.

Activities being provided: pinhole projector/viewers, UV Bead and skin safety activities, San Antonio Area parks and Recreation, CPS Energy, Booz, Allen Hamilton Consulting and Analytics, San Antonio College MESA Student Projects, NASA's Live tracking of Totality across the country will stream on the planetarium dome, Solar Telescopes and astronomers from Scobee, SAC and SAAA, and 1,000 ISO 12312-2 solar filter glasses.  More activities and volunteer organizations are joining the program each day.
