Job Shadow Day 2017

Learning from the Ground Up

Aubri Simpson knew she wanted to become an engineer since high school. Several people in her family were mechanics and she loved the idea of being able to create something that would last for years. Her dream was deferred for a while when she became the mother of two children. But now she is a sophomore at SAC studying civil engineering.

Recently Simpson was able to get an insider's look at her career during the 4 th  Annual San Antonio College Architecture/Engineering Job Shadow Day. The event gives students the opportunity to visit local firms, meet with professionals working in the field, and see up close how businesses operate on a daily basis. Frequently, the students will also visit job sites to further their understanding of an architect or an engineers' work.

This year, 68 students took part in the Job Shadow Day. They were invited by 20 local firms to visit their offices and talk to architects and engineers about the work they do.

Danny Cornejo, director of business development for O'Connell Robertson, an architectural and engineering firm, has been involved with the Job Shadow Day since the beginning. For the last two years, he has been in charge of coordinating the event.

Cornejo said the event has grown and evolved. The major reason is that both the students and the companies have had positive experiences through the engagement.

"This program is fantastic. We have heard nothing but great things about it from the staff, the faculty, and our peers in the industry and the students," explained Cornejo.

Another reason for the growth has been a SAC connection. "Several of the representatives from the firms also came through San Antonio College. This is part of them giving back to the college," said Cornejo.

The event culminates with a luncheon at SAC where students and representatives from the local firms talk about what they experienced.

For Simpson, the visiting Bain Medina Bain Engineers and Surveyors reaffirmed her decision to become an engineer. "Going to the firm showed me I am close to my goal," she said.

The Job Shadow Day was organized and hosted by O'Connell Robertson and the Alamo Colleges Foundation.
