Naval Lawyer Changes…

Dr. Francisco "Franc" Solis is a proud SAC alumnus and currently serves as the Dean of Performance Excellence, but before that he was a lawyer in the U.S. Navy.

Naval Lawyer Changes Path to Become Funeral Director, Then Dean

In his nearly twenty years at San Antonio College, Dr. Francisco Solis, a proud SAC alumnus and current Dean of Performance Excellence, is an inspiration to students, faculty, and staff alike.

Born and raised in San Antonio, Texas in the mid-1960s, Dr. Solis attended Woodlawn Hills Elementary and remembers fondly the words of his first grade teacher, “I expect great things from you.”

After graduating from Central Catholic High School, he attended St. Edward’s University to study English and Writing, and then he continued onto the University of Texas at Austin where he earned a doctorate of jurisprudence.

After serving three years in the Navy as a lawyer at Naval Air Station Corpus Christi, Dr. Solis decided that he did not want to pursue law after all. He returned home to San Antonio and began working with a family friend, Mr. Guadalupe Trevino.

Mr. Trevino owned Trevino Funeral Home on the city’s West side. Over nearly a decade, Dr. Solis worked alongside Mr. Trevino as the Chief Financial Officer where he oversaw the sale of the company to a large conglomerate. For several years, Dr. Solis worked for the new owners as a compliance officer traveling throughout the Valley and South Texas.

In need of more funeral directors, Mr. Trevino reached out to San Antonio College’s Mortuary Science department. In time, Dr. Solis reached the conclusion that he could be a Funeral Director and enrolled in the program. In 1995, Dr. Solis graduated from San Antonio College with an Associate of Applied Science in Mortuary Science.

A star pupil and proud alumnus, Dr. Solis was recruited to apply for a teaching position and was hired as a full time adjunct professor in 1999. Since then, he has been dedicated to student success in one form or another. For many years, Dr. Solis served as the program coordinator helping make the Mortuary Science program one of SAC’s 11 exemplary programs as rated by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.

Today, Dr. Solis serves in an administrative role as the Dean of Performance Excellence. He takes pride in helping steer the College to stay focused on the mission of serving students—a practice he does not just preach but demonstrates regularly when he teaches a three-credit-hour night class each semester.

In his free time, Dr. Solis enjoys being with his son, Alejandro, 12 years old, and husband, Gerry.
