Topic Proposals Due:  Friday, March 5
Papers Due:  Wednesday, April 15

Final Presentations Proposals Due:  Wednesday, April 15
Final Presentation Dates:  April 21, 26, 28 & 30

(revised 1/10)

In this class, you will be required to write a research paper (approximately five pages in length) on the topic of the art of your heritage or culture.  You will also make a class presentation on the same topic, using a presentation method of your own choice (see Final Presentation description below). <>

Getting Started:

The goal of your research paper is to investigate the art of your national heritage and/or cultural background.   You may trace your heritage back to any point in history and select an art form from that period to research, or trace the lineage of art from your national or cultural background.  On the other hand, you may see yourself as belonging to a cultural community not necessarily associated with national ties (Chicano, distinct areas of San Antonio, distinct music forms, etc.)  If this culture has produced a visual art form, you may base your research paper on it, looking into the art form’s relationship to the culture itself.  Once you have decided on your topic, you will submit a short, one-paragraph proposal to me, due on Friday, March 5.  NOTE:  This proposal should describe, 1) the art you plan to investigate, 2) your relationship to it, and 3) specific artworks or objects you will focus on.

On Monday, March 8, you will begin your research during our class meeting at the library (see course schedule).  This session with the Reference Librarian will take place during our regularly scheduled class time.

Final Paper:
Your final paper will be a well-written essay, approximately five pages in length (standard font, double-spaced), with at least four to five cited sources, no more than one of which is an internet source. When using an internet source, remember that they must be legitimate, meaning that they are authored and published by an academic or art institution  (look for .edu or .org websites).  When published sources are included in your final paper, provide proper citation (see Sylvan Barnet, A Short Guide to Writing About Art, on reserve in the library). You may use either MLA style or the Turabian Style.  Information on how to use either style is available through the SAC Learning Resource Center website (see http://www.alamo.edu/sac/library/faculty/deosdade/WRITING.HTM).  Your final paper will be due on Wednesday, April 14.  All late papers will lose one-third a letter grade per day they are late.

Final Presentation:
After completing your paper and turning it in, you will be asked to briefly present its contents to the class sometime during the last two weeks of the semester.  The format of your project can range from creating a website on your topic (or some aspect of it), to simply presenting a very brief (5-7 minute) illustrated lecture using PowerPoint, Portfolio or bringing in actual artworks and objects related to your topic (remember, this is about the visual arts!).  You may think of other, more creative ways to present your material.  I only ask that you give me a Proposal to let me know 1) the topic of your presentation (it may be a very brief summary of your research paper topic, or one portion of it), 2) how you will make your final presentation (illustrated lecture, website demonstration, PowerPoint, etc.), and 3) what audio-visual equipment (if any) you will need.  This proposal must be turned in to me by Wednesday, April 14 so that I may begin scheduling final presentations.   (All presentation material on disk or drive must be tested on the classroom computer prior to the student’s presentation date to ensure that it works properly.)

Grading:
Your grade for this assignment will be based on the quality of your paper (80%), your attendance of the Library Research Presentation during class on Monday, March 8 (5%), the inclusion of a complete and properly cited bibliography (5%), and your class presentation (10%).  In terms of quality, I will be looking for a well written paper that reflects a thoughtful and thorough analysis of the subject matter (the art you have chosen to investigate), supported by your outside research.
