LIBRARY GUIDE

REVEIW FOR EXAM 2

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This is a lecture course exploring the elements of visual language, their nature, functions and relationships in painting, sculpture, architecure and design.  Focus is on the development and application of critical thinking skills.  (This course qualifies as 3 hours of the International Studies Local Certificate.  This course also meets the requirements of the Mexican American studies initiative.)

REQUIRED TEXT & READING ASSIGNMENTS:

All readings are from Henry M. Sayre, A World of Art, Revised 5th ed. (Prentice Hall, 2007).  Required readings are listed on the course calendar below. In order to be an active participant in class discussions, you are required to read assigned pages prior to attending the corresponding lecture. You will be responsible for all lecture and text material on your exams.

GRADING:

Your grade for this course will be calculated from two in-class exams (15% each; 30% total), a formal analysis paper (10%), a museum assignments (20%), a research paper, including a brief presentation (20%), and a final exam (20%). The museum assignments and research paper will be discussed in greater detail as the semester proceeds (see calendar below.)  Extra credit may be earned by attending a public lecture on art in San Antonio or visiting a current art exhibition and writing a short summary of either event (5%).  Specific information regarding these events will be announced in class at a later date.

ATTENDANCE:

Regular class attendance and thorough note-taking is imperative since material derived from class lectures and discussions will be given greater emphasis on the exams, and it is expected that information presented in the classroom will enter into your research paper and final project. Excessive absences can lead to the student being dropped from the course (see Attendance policy in the Course Bulletin).

ACADEMIC DISHONESTY:

Students found guilty of plagiarism, collusion, or cheating on exams in this course will be subject to the Alamo Colleges penalities as outlined in the "Student Code of Conduct" in the Student Handbook.

MAKE-UP EXAM POLICY:

Make-up exams will be offered only in the case of an emergency situation and at the instructor's discretion.  In such a situation, it is the student's responsibility to notify the instructor immediately if unable to take an exam.  Failure to take the final exam will result in a final course grade of "F".
