WRITING AN ART REVIEW

1.    Identify the exhibit you are reviewing by title, place, name(s) of included artist(s), and the date you attended.

2.    Give an overview of the exhibit (theme, media included, artists’ affiliations, etc.). If a solo exhibition, look for an artist’s statement to help you understand his/her intentions.  If you review a group show, look for a curator’s statement (answering why particular artists were included).

3.    Give your overall impression of the exhibit.  How do the artworks operate as a whole?  How is the exhibit composed?

4.    Select three to five works from the exhibit to describe in further depth.  They may simply be the works that appeal to you the most, or represent a set that has some particular qualities in common (e.g. figure studies, oil paintings, etc.).  Perhaps the works you have selected best exemplify the theme of the exhibit or the style of the artist. Whatever the case, carefully describe the artworks in terms of both subject (if representational) and form.  Use a proper art vocabulary in your description.

5.    Conclude with a summary of your experience, including what you learned from your visit.
